The length of warranty periods vary from mattress to mattress. A good quality mattress will have at least a ten year warranty. Some warranties offer full-replacement value while others offer prorated values after a certain period of time. For example, a manufacturer may offer a ten year warranty with 7 years non-prorated and 3 years prorated. That means in last three years of the warranty, you will only receive a percentage of the full value towards your replacement mattress.
You'll never know when guests come to your home to stay for the night or relatives coming for a vacation perhaps. Providing them with a bed to rest is a very hospitable and gracious way of accommodating your guest. Some guests however will be more than happy to sleep in the sofa.
Developed in the 1960's for use by astronauts, memory foam is a synthetic material made of polyurethane. Many people who have refinished wood furniture are aware that polyurethane is highly flammable in most forms. But memory foam is not the only highly flammable material used in mattress manufacturing. Other foams and synthetic stuffing have also been shown to have particularly fast burn rates. This means that the flammability problem with mattress materials is two-fold: the rate of ignition is high, meaning they catch fire easily; and they burn very quickly.
If the old bed is not in decent enough shape to be donated and the customer wants to avoid adding to the local landfill, alternative uses for used mattresses abound, especially for the materials that they are made of. Fasteners and buttons can be removed from the old item and given to sewers and crafters for repurposing. The foam padding and cotton and poly-fill batting can be removed and used to re-stuff couch cushions or to use in new pillows. These are the materials that make up the comfort layers of the mattress, and also make good packing materials.
