Just because your mattress is nicely covered and looks clean doesnt necessarily mean that they are actually clean. Although our mattresses might look cosy and plush, covered with bed sheets that are changed regularly, it is NOT sufficient to keep the mattress clean for sleeping.
Just consider what goes into a typical high-quality traditional pocket-sprung British mattress from Hypnos: - 48cm of tempered steel in each spring. - Two layers, each of 1000 or more of these individually pocketed springs. - Then there are layers of, for example, cotton, lambswool, mohair, cashmere, silk, or horse hair. - Then there may be an anti-allergy layer, which is usually covered with the finest Belgian damask. - Then there are the hours of skilful hand-crafting that goes into the construction, such as hand-teasing the horse hair, lambs wool, or mohair; side-stitching the mattress borders to the springs; or hand-tufting the surfaces together.
Developed in the 1960's for use by astronauts, memory foam is a synthetic material made of polyurethane. Many people who have refinished wood furniture are aware that polyurethane is highly flammable in most forms. But memory foam is not the only highly flammable material used in mattress manufacturing. Other foams and synthetic stuffing have also been shown to have particularly fast burn rates. This means that the flammability problem with mattress materials is two-fold: the rate of ignition is high, meaning they catch fire easily; and they burn very quickly.
